Classic Super Nintendo games can be can be played on the New Nintendo 3DS (NN3DS) and NN3DS XL that were updated last year. Owners of NN3DS will have the chance to download games from the Nintendo E-Shop and play SNES titles including Super Mario World, F-Zero, and Pilotwings.

Since the 3DS console was launched in 2010 SNES support has been one of the top requests for the virtual console library. Many experts argued that the handheld console is not powerful enough as a 16-bit emulator, according to Engadget.

In fact, it is the reason Nintendo has not launched Game Boy Advane titles for the portable gaming console. There were just a few games added to the 3DS Ambassador program in 2011.

However, the new Nintendo 3DS has an upgraded processor that seems to give the device enough power to handle old-school SNES games. The problem is people who have not upgraded their console cannot play the retro Nintendo games.

Virtual Console (VC) SNES games will include a Perfect Pixel mode that will keep the hardware's original aspect ratio.

Nintendo has promised to launch a few classic games during the next few weeks. They include Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart, Super Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Nintendo has released some details about the Super Nintendo games for 3DS. They will cost $7.99 per game, but there will be no discounts for those who already bought the games on Wii U.

In other Nintendo news the gaming giant announced at its Nintendo Direct presentation that US consoles will get role-playing games (RPGs), according to The Verge. They include Atlus' Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE that will be launched for Wii U on June 24.

Meanwhile, Square Enix's Bravely Second: End Layer will be rolled out for 3DS on April 15. Other titles to be shipped to the US include Monster Hunter Generations for 3DS this summer, and Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past will be released later this year.

All of the titles have been available in Japan for a few months or more. They will help Nintendo to stay ahead of other US gaming systems in terms of the number of Japanese RPG titles available.
