DiRT Rally for the Microsoft Xbox One is no longer running below 1080p, but that doesn't mean it is on par with the PlayStation 4 version, which is still superior.
Anyone remembers DiRT Rally from Codemasters that was released first on the Windows PC platform back in 2015? Well, it is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the Microsoft platform won't be playing second fiddle for the most part.
Previously, the Xbox One version was set to run at 900p resolution and 60 frames per second. However, it seems the developer managed to learn more about the hardware because game will now run at 1080p and 60 frames per second. But there's a catch here, one not found on the PlayStation 4 version of the game.

You see, to get the game running at that resolution, Codemasters had to use a dynamic cap system similar to Halo 5: Guardians. This means that the game won't always be running at 1080p, but Paul Coleman, Chief Games Designer at Codemasters said the game dipping below 1080p will only happen during rare instances. He did not specify where exactly this might happen, but we're guessing at times when a scene is filled with activity.
"Actually, I can confidently say that the game runs 1080p 60fps on Xbox One but we do have the dynamic system in place for the very rare circumstances that it needs it just to ensure that the framerate remains at a consistent 60. It's something we always wanted and although it has been a challenge I'm delighted that we have managed to achieve it," says Coleman in an interview with GamingBolt.
The publication went on to ask Coleman if the developer plans on updating the game for DirectX12. As it stands, Codemasters is not going in that direction right now with DiRT Rally for the PC, nor does it plan on doing so in the future.
One can understand why since the game was built with DirectX11 as the base. Doing any amount of work right now to get the game to a higher level would warrant more work than the developer may want to tackle at this moment in time. We expect that as DirectX12 becomes more mature with more hardware support, Codemasters and other developers will have little choice but to jump onboard the train.
