iPhone battery life can be boosted by taking steps such as removing the Facebook app but not by closing all apps. An Apple executive has shared that the trick of often closing all iOS multi-tasking software by swiping away apps will not delay the next time smartphone owners have to juice up their devices. This differs from the fact that closing all apps on a Mac can help to extend the computer's battery life.

Apple's head of software and senior vice president Craig Federighi shared the information when an iPhone owner emailed the company a pair of questions addressed to CEO Tim Cook. He asked if Cook closes his iOS multitasking apps often and if the step is needed to increase the mobile device's battery life, according to 9to5Mac.

Federighi explained that the answer to both questions was "No." Apple has not made it easy to close many apps. The majority of mobile applications have little background activity and the swiping method of closing action is mainly used for frozen apps and when the software must be reset, according to Quartz.

The question was asked by an Apple customer named Caleb from Ohio.

Meanwhile, closing apps on other smartphones can extend the battery life. Google suggests that Android users close all apps that are often not used. However, it also notes that using the Overview device manager for this task will drain the phone's battery.

Samsung has published a related announcement about a "smart manager" app for Galaxy 6 smartphones. It mentions that closing running apps and uninstalling unneeded apps will help to optimize the unit's function.

Microsoft notes on a web page about boosting battery life that it is beneficial for Nokia Lumia owners to close apps that are not being used.

Many iPhone owners also shut down apps because they believe it will increase the handsets' battery life. However, the tech company has not provided official advice that this step should be taken.

Apple does recommend in a list of power-saving tips that people disable apps from doing background refreshes. However, apps frozen in RAM or not running are just displayed on the system so the battery life is not drained.
