Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) as well as Sony Network Entertainment (SNE) have been collapsed into a new company named Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). SIE will be headquartered in California's San Francisco Bay area and have other offices located in London and Tokyo. The big change took effect on April 1, Friday but was not an April Fools' Day joke.

SIE's goal is to increase PlayStation user engagement and average revenue per paying user (ARPPU). Sony stated that SIE will work to develop high-end games and services for global consumers.
The Sony subsidiary will not change the diamond SCE logo. PlayStation Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has already made a Twitter post that shows the company's name change.
SIE President Andrew House shared that merging the two units will strengthen the newly-formed company and boost the growth of PlayStation, according to CNET. He shared that SIE will team up with business partners to develop innovative products and services to stay ahead of other gaming companies.
One of Sony's goals in forming the new company is to focus on developing gaming platforms including the PS4 console and PlayStation VR headset, according to Tech Radar. The company's PS4 system leads Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U but its TV and mobile divisions are having problems.
Sony's name change might not produce any big benefits to consumers right now. However, it was a business decision to shift its focus to the PlayStation platform.
Last week Sony also announced it is creating a new subsidiary that will center on creating mobile games to be rolled out for the Asia market.
In related news Sony reportedly might make PlayStation VR available for Windows PCs. SCE executive VP Masayasu Ito told Japanese newspaper Nikkei that the company could make the VR headset compatible with personal computers after launch. However, he also added that Sony is now focusing on developing games for the virtual reality platform.
Ito shared that Sony has plans to ship up to 2 million PS VR units this year. It will also launch this fall due to global demand for the VR device being higher than original projections.
