The beta version of the OS was released ahead of the 2016 Google I/O in May. The latest release is the final build and has squashed all the bugs in the beta version.
Anyone with a Google Nexus or Android One smartphone can go onto the Android website to download Android Nougat. Otherwise, users would have to rely on the manufacturers of their devices for OTA updates which can be as late as next February or March if last year's pattern is followed.
While not much has changed in this new update aesthetically, there are many under the hood changes that have taken place.
Doze, a feature introduced by Google in the Android Marshmallow, has had a few enhancements in Android N. What it essentially does is extend battery life when the phone is not being used by putting the apps to sleep, hence the name "doze."
Furthermore, the notification panel has been redesigned. In Nougat, when you pull down the notification bar you would get quick access to a few power controls with your notifications underneath, and pressing the expandable drop-down button on the right will bring you to your full quick settings page.
For the notifications, Google has abandoned the card design and replaced it with a more minimalistic sheet of white. Notifications are now separated by a thin gray line, and they can be bundled together with a single application. Users can now be able to reply to notifications directly from the notification panel.
Lately, Google has been trying to incorporate a multi-window feature in the API with other manufacturers like Samsung already doing so. The Android N API also supports the new picture-in-picture video mode, which allows videos to keep playing over other applications in a mini-window. It is a good feature to have on a plus-sized phone.
