As internet abuse reaches a new peak, netizens have criticized online platforms, condemning their apparent inability to safeguard users from attackers.
According to Microsoft's head of online safety, Jacqueline Beauchere, Microsoft's move to ban hate speech is not new. What is new is the specific tool the company has built to combat it.
Microsoft's new tools depend on a "notice-and-takedown" approach which encourages users to call the attention of the company when they find abusive content. Wired reported that Microsoft has a dedicated team, which evaluates each complaint that comes through before determining the necessary action to take.
Microsoft's recent move goes to show that internet platforms are now prioritizing the well-being of their users and ensuring that the environment is fun and safe.
