Animals Asia has released Rainbow the Moon Bear back into the wild.
Rainbow, a young moon bear rescued in the mountains of Peng Zhou, China in August, has been released back into the wild.
Four weeks after animal rights group Animal Asia rescued Rainbow from the mountains, they are sending it back into the wild. Bear biologists Liu Fang, John Beecham, and Dave Garshelis revealed that the bear's wounds were already healing. Although her damaged paw could not be saved and her cracked canine needed to be removed, they agreed that she was ready to return to the mountains.

Jill Robinsons, the founder and CEO of Animals Asia, said that "Returning Rainbow to the wild required faith, but the experts are unanimous this is the best thing for her."
Rainbow is the first rescued bear that Animals Asia has released back into the wild. The group explained that when bears are rescued, they seldom know where they were taken from because illegally captured bears are usually moved miles away from their home. As a result, it is difficult to return the bears to their original homes.
In Rainbow's case, Animals Asia was able to collaborate with officials from Peng Zhou Forestry who know the region very well. They were able to locate where the bear was born, and where she spent most of her life before she was captured.
It was a horrific sight when rescuers found Rainbow in the mountains as she was riddled in maggots, while her teeth were damaged from her attempt to chew off her own paw to escape. Rainbow is one of the many bears captured by traps laid out by hunters in the wild. In China, hunters capture bears for their bile since they believe, without any scientific basis, that it can be used as a remedy for several ailments.
While Vietnam has already outlawed bear bile farms, in China they are still legal.
