Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shared pictures of the company's massive Lulea data center located in Northern Sweden.

The data center is located 70 miles south of the Arctic Circle. It was established in 2013, but it still represents cutting-edge technology as the center uses the cold arctic air to keep its servers chilled and running.

Data centers are known for their high consumption of energy. Zuckerberg explained that the Lulea data center is designed to draw the cold outside air to keep the servers inside from heating up. The servers' heat is used for maintaining temperature when the outside temperature plunges to -30 degrees during the winter season.

Zuckerberg highlighted the efficiency of the data center. The establishment has a simplified design to minimize human resources. The entire center is managed by only 150 employees. It requires only one technician per 25,000 servers. Zuckerberg said that the equipment in the center are stripped down to their essentials, to facilitate quicker access and repair.

The inspiration behind the center came from engineer Jay Park, who streamlined the movement of power from the local utility grid to Facebook's servers. The resulting system led to 10 percent increase in efficiency, and it uses 40 percent less power than conventional data centers. This efficiency helps Facebook in keeping its costs low.

Facebook's Lulea data center is primarily powered by renewable energy using hydroelectric dams. It was Facebook's first data center outside of the United States. This massive data hall is the size of six football fields, and the engineers move around on scooters.
