Cyber-criminals on Facebook are apparently taking advantage of the "Brangelina" split to bait people into clicking a link to a fake story that the actor has committed suicide after his divorce. The article appears with a black and white photo of Pitt captioned "RIP Brad Pitt." Fox News' banner was also used to make the article look legit.

Once the article is clicked, users will be redirected to an application that could gather Facebook data.

A few lines of the story that appear on Facebook says "Brad Pitt, 52, a multi-awarded American actor and husband of Angelina Jolie, 41, shot himself in the head at a shooting range on Sunday. He was under significant stress because the couple were going through a divorce and he had a history of depression."

The Daily Mail reported that the hoax surfaced on Sept. 21 shortly after the celebrity couple announced their separation.

Facebook has suggested that people who have already accessed the link change their password. The social media site has also urged users to run an anti-malware program to detect possible intrusions.

The site behind the fake Pitt story has also released hoax articles about the deaths of Jaden Smith, Vin Diesel, Nicolas Cage, John Cena, and Sylvester Stallone.
