Samsung has bought artificial intelligence and assistant system startup Viv.
Korean technology giant Samsung announced the acquisition of Viv, an artificial intelligence and assistant system.
Under the takeover, Viv will offer services to Samsung and its platform. However, Viv will keep operating as an independent company. Samsung did not provide financial details for the deal.

Viv was co-founded by Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer, and Chris Brigham. The trio is behind the creation of Siri, which was later bought by Apple. After the acquisition, the creators left Apple to co-found Viv. According to TechCrunch, Kittlaus stated that the vastness of Samsung's operations is the reason behind their decision to sell the technology. "They ship 500 million devices a year," he noted.
Samsung explained that the acquisition of Viv was done through the company's mobile team. However, the system will likely be implemented across different devices. The company may also integrate the system with its home appliance, creating an Internet of Things ecosystem.
Artificial Intelligence is becoming an important segment for technology companies. In the recent past, behemoths such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon have come up with of AI-based assistants. Google recently introduced Assistant, to compete with Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa. Amazon also unveiled its Alexa-powered Echo speakers, which may be used for controlling compatible devices.
In a press statement, Samsung specified that the deal shows the company's commitment to virtual personal assistance. The statement also said that the company is striving to offer an AI-based open ecosystem, which will work across different devices and services.
