PC shipments continued to decline in the third quarter of this year.

The PC industry is experiencing its longest decline in history. Analysts report that worldwide shipments fell by 5.7 percent in the third quarter of 2016.

PC makers are already feeling the pressure as shipments continue to decline - now eight quarters in a row. Analyst firm, Gartner, held that it is the longest duration of decline in the history of the industry. The threat likely comes from smartphones and tablets, which have more aggressive update cycles. It is also alarming for the industry that tablets are now considered viable laptop replacements.

An analyst at Gartner, Mikako Kitawaga, told The Verge that "The PC is not a high priority device for the majority of consumers, so they do not feel the need to upgrade their PCs as often as they used to."

Among the competitors, Lenovo still holds the top spot for PC maker with about 21 percent in the market. US-based Hewlett-Packard (HP) pulled almost even, but during the quarter both lost ground. Dell remains in the third spot, fourth place went to Apple and Asus landed in the fifth.

In summary, Lenovo shipments totaled 14.5 million units, which declined by 3.2 percent, leaving the company with a 21.3 percent market share. HP unit shipments totaled 14.4 million units, growing by 3.3 percent in the quarter, leaving the company with a 21.2 percent market share.

Meanwhile, Dell's shipments increased to about 6.2 percent during the quarter, while Apple suffered the largest decline of 13 percent. Asus, which garnered the fifth place, saw its shipments rise by 5.2 percent.
