Japanese researchers have built a robot that can be your new gym buddy. Not only can this humanoid robot do different styles of pushups and run, but it also sweats like a human.

A team from the JSK Laboratory at the University of Tokyo developed this new humanoid robot known as Kengoro. The robot possesses more than a hundred different motors that generate a massive amount of heat energy.

Other robots rely on active cooling systems such as water pumps and fans, including radiators and heat sinks. However, these types of cooling processes can become very bulky and consume a lot of power.

Kengoro possesses multiple components that tend to overheat. However, there is no space for an active cooling system in the robot. Instead, the team opted to build a passive cooling system that is directly incorporated into the robotic frame.

The scientists built a unique water circulation system within the metal skeleton of Kengoro, allowing water to percolate around its motors for a total cooling effect. This, in turn, allows water to evaporate while cooling the robot's motors, leading to Kengoro sweating a lot.

Like humans, Kengoro can sweat, also making this a very efficient cooling technique. This can now allow Kengoro to execute pushups for 11 minutes nonstop, without overheating its body. Sweating is more effective than other passive cooling such as air or water circulations but still less efficient than active cooling systems.

The team successfully used this cooling method, requiring virtually zero power, in a very compact and lightweight system as well.

Kengoro can run around for 12 hours using only a cup of water for power. But sweating robots can also get thirsty too.
