A study involving 24 countries has revealed that alcoholic drinks contribute four times more to the global calorie consumption than soft drinks do. The results show that consumers are increasingly weaning off soda to watch their calorie and sugar intake. The trend has also fueled the demand for healthier snacks.

The study, conducted by Euromonitor International, covered countries such as the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. The difference was the highest in the case of South Korea, where consumers derive four times as many calories from alcohol than they do from soda. A person in South Korea tends to get 168 calories from alcohol while sugary drinks account for 44 calories.
The only exception was Taiwan where sugary drinks contribute more towards total calorie intake. The UK reported 106 calories a day from booze vis-à-vis 98 calories from sugary drinks. For France, the stats stood at 109.3 calories from alcohol in comparison to 88 calories from soft drinks.
The data shows that while consumers are aware of the risk of obesity in sugary drinks, they tend to ignore it when it comes to alcoholic drinks. The main reason behind this phenomenon is that many alcoholic drinks are not marked with their calorie content. However, alcohol can lead to weight increase as a standard glass of 13% wine is considered to have nearly 160 calories.
The report also compared the calories consumption across countries. The highest number of per capita calorie consumption is Belgium at 2,559 calories. India reported the lowest consumption at 761 calories per capita per day. The global average daily per capita consumption of calories stood at 1,398 calories.
