M51 (also known as the Whirlpool galaxy, or NGC 5194,5195) in the constellation Canes Venatici.
Scientists say that they are receiving bizarre signals from deep space, specifically signals from distant star systems. Analysis revealed some odd "modulations" originating from a small group of stars.
In this new study, these modulations were traced back to 234 stars from 2.5 million known stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Scientists say that this small set of stars are behaving unlike normal stars do.

According to scientists E.F. Borra and E. Trottier from Laval University in Quebec, Canada, these signals possess the exact shape of extraterrestrial signals that were detailed in a recently published study. Since they originally come from a small fraction of stars within a narrow spectral range, the signals are in agreement with the extraterrestrial intelligent life hypothesis.
Despite this, the scientists say that further research and work are needed to confirm or deny this hypothesis. The next step would be observing these signals on different scientific telescopes and equipment.
According to Stephen Hawking and Mark Zuckerberg, who are also strong supporters of a project to search for alien life known as Breakthrough Listen, these signals or message was very promising but would require further research before they can be attributed to intelligent life.
Researchers say that it is still too early to "unequivocally attribute" these signals to advanced alien civilizations. This would require international protocols from SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) and all natural explanations would have to be exhausted before aliens could be confidently said to have sent these signals.
This new study was published in the journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
