Tesla is talks with Solar City for a potential buyout.
Tesla's much awaited solar roof product will finally be launched at the Universal Studios, Los Angeles on Friday.
The company had started sending out invitations for the event on Tuesday. The event would be streamed live.
The announcement describes the new product as a "fundamental part of achieving differentiated product strategy, where you have a beautiful roof." The company also boasted that the roof involves a "quite difficult engineering challenge and not something that is available anywhere else."

Hints about the environmentally friendly product first surfaced during the second-quarter earnings call of Solar City. However, the company was not mentioned in Tesla's invitation.
Tesla has announced that the roof will be integrated with the Powerwall 2.0 battery and a charger.
Beside the solar energy-powered roof, the company has also pledged to produce solar cells in coordination with Panasonic provided that the merger of Tesla-Solar City goes ahead as planned.
Meanwhile, Tesla is currently in talks with Solar City regarding the $2.6 billion worth buyout. Votes for the possible merger will be on Nov. 17.
Despite the large amount of money involved in the merger, it has been facing criticisms due to the possible debts Tesla may add to its 2017 balance sheets. These debts may arise from the Model 3 production and the more than $3 billion purchase of Solar City.
Musk has a 20 percent share in Solar City shares. He is also the current chairman as well as the cousin of Lyndon Rive, the CEO of the company.
