The Piccadilly Circus is a unique square in London that displays large illuminated advertising billboards. It is a popular attraction for locals and travelers to the city and is even touted as a meeting point.
The lights at the Piccadilly Circus are set to be switched off next year as the square gets revamped.
This would the longest period that the lights would be switched off since the end of the second World War. A giant new screen would be put up at the Picadilly Cirus. Until the project is completed, the famous lights of the London square would be shut down. Since 1949, this is the first time that the lights would be switched off except for occasional power cuts and special occasions.
A static advertising banner featuring signed brands would be used in place of the lights for a large part of next year.
The Land Securities Department of London would replace the illuminated advertising board of the square with an ultra high-definition curved screen that would boast of one of the highest resolution LED displays in the world for a screen of its size. The new screen would display things like live video streaming, sports scores, traffic and weather as well as financial information and real-time social media feeds.
According to Land Securities, the upgrade is necessary to protect the heritage of Piccadilly Circus and to maintain the global reputation of London as a center of invention and innovation.
Coca-Cola has been displaying its ads for a long time at the square. According to Coca-Cola, there are only a handful of advertising spaces in the world that can be called as iconic and unique as the Piccadilly Circus Lights.
