"Overwatch" is getting ready to celebrate the Chinese New Year with its "Year of the Rooster" seasonal event. The event will kick off on Jan 24, 2017.
The official "Overwatch" Twitter accounts released an image of Mei in a traditional Chinese costume. The game's official Korean account also flaunts D.Va wearing a traditional Korean getup as well. Sources claim that another leaked ad for the event highlights costumes based on the Chinese folk story "Journey to the West."
PC Gamer reported that a Chinese Overwatch player apparently stumbled on the poster. The Chinese text on the ad translates into "Journey to the West limited skins. Year of the Rooster, free trial: January 24 to January 31." However, there is no proof that the poster is genuine.
The player's skins depict several characters from the popular Chinese novel, which has been adapted in anime and video games. "Dragon Ball" and "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" are some of its notable multimedia adaptations. The supposedly leaked poster shows Zenyatta as Buddhist monk Xuanzang, Roadhog as the pig monster Zhu Bajie, Reinhardt as the sand monster Sha Wujing, and Winston as the recognizable Sun Wukong.
On Thursday, Reddit user Jokar101 suggested that there were some hints of the upcoming Chinese New Year skins during the game's "Winter Wonderland" event, according to iDigital Times. In this picture, the ornament sprays for D.Va and Mei look similar to their "Year of the Rooster" skins. As a result, some users have noted that the rest of the ornament sprays for other characters could be teasers for more upcoming skins.
According to Polygon, a Blizzard spokesperson confirmed that the "Year of the Rooster" event for "Overwatch" would be similar to previous in-game events. It will reportedly include sprays, voice lines, emotes, character skins, and other cosmetic items. New gameplay modes might also be added like Mei's Snowball offensive and Junkenstein's Revenge.
