The Apple Watch Series 3 is rumored to sport the new glass-film (G/F) display and will be launched in the third quarter of this year. It will be using a different display technology this time around.
The Apple Watch Series 3 will be ditching the old glass-on-glass (G/G) display solution from the TPK Holding. The company has been exclusively producing these display touch panels for the Apple Watch since two years. These displays utilized two pieces of glass, making it costly.
Many yield issues for the G/G or touch-on-lens (TOL) panels and the unmet Apple's demands are among the predicament of the Apple supplier TPK Holding. That led Apple to focus on manufacturing 3D Touch embedded OLED displays and stop the display production for the Apple Watch Series 3 this year.
The Apple Watch Series 3 will adopt the G/F displays since they are cost-friendly and secure better yield rates. The big tech company Apple will be hiring either the Taiwan-based General Interface Solution or the Hong Kong-based Biel Crystal Manufactory to replace the TPK Holding to produce the glass film.
The Apple Watch Series 3 is also rumored to have an extended battery life to support tons of other activities on the wearable. Apple filed a patent of approval in 2015 for the production of an inductive charger, which looks like a tiny wire connected to the battery on the strap of the smartwatch. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) just approved the patent filing on Feb. 2, including modular bands, a heart rate identification system, and haptic feedback band.
The Apple Watch Series 3 will also come with cellular connectivity, sleep tracking features, and an always-on display. It will run the new watchOS 4 software. It is expected to be released sometime in fall with shipments to begin in the second half of this year.
