Sex is essential to humans as it is the means to reproduce and maintain the population. However, a new study suggests that the need for sex is to bond couples and it may be as important as anything else.
Although sex may only be performed for a few minutes by couples, it can give an afterglow that can last up to 48 hours. This afterglow is essential as it plays a vital role in bonding couples and increasing relationship satisfaction.
The study published in "Psychological Science" found that the sexual afterglow which couples may experience can last for up to 48 hours. Couples who are sexually active have higher relationship satisfaction due to this afterglow and not the sex itself.
The findings of the study reinforces another study published in February suggesting that sexually active couples are happier compared to those who make love less frequently because of the time spent cuddling after sex, instead of the pleasure of the orgasm.
The lead author of the study, Andrea Meltzer, said that the sexual satisfaction remains elevated 48 hours after sex. Also, people with a stronger sexual afterglow have higher levels of relationship satisfaction, according to Eureka Alert.
The researchers gathered data from newlywed couples about their sex lives. They evaluated the frequency of sex as well as relationship satisfaction. They found out that couples who make love have lingering sexual satisfaction for the next two days. According to Medical Daily, this is true regardless of the individuals' gender, age, the length of relationship, personality traits, and how often the couple had sex on average.
Meltzer further pointed out the significance of their study. She said that it is essential because it reinforces other studies that suggest that sex keeps the bond in a relationship.
