The Atlantic Ocean is expanding, while the Arctic Ocean is diminishing as warm waters is invading into the northern parts of the planet. This is a finding of the study situated north of the Russian archipelago Severnaya Zemlya. The rapid change in temperatures of the oceans north of the Scandinavian Peninsula and Russia is attributed to climate change.
According to Sciencedaily, the eastern side of the Arctic Ocean has been undergoing vertical mixing, which is a characteristic of the iceless parts of the Atlantic. Not only this, because the Arctic is losing sea ice, particularly during the summer months. In the last decade since 2011, the Eurasian Basin has nearly been stripped on ice as the ice formation has been very weak to form a layer.
At the same time, in a recent report by Livescience, this phenomenon is very evident in the stratified layers of the Arctic Ocean. There are some areas in the Arctic of which the cap of ice that separates the layers have melted completely. The result is the streaming of the warm Atlantic waters above to the surface. Moreover, the warm temperature has allowed more mixing and the reduction of the sea ice.
