Bethesda Softworks has announced the release date for id Software’s landmark first-person shooter “Doom,” which will premiere on May 13 across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

“Doom” is under development at Id Software, the Mesquite, Texas-based game studio that created the original title. The original team has long since disbanded, but Bethesda has kept the fire going with a new generation of developers. It has been a long time coming for Doom. Following a failed first attempt at designing a Call of Duty-inspired “Doom” reboot, Bethesda restarted the project with more of a traditional concept at its core.

The publisher also has announced a “Doom” collector's edition. It includes centerpiece of which is a 12-inch statue of one of the game's baddest demons called the Revenant. The figure was made by TriForce, which used actual game files from id Software to nail the creature's look. The beast stands on an LED-lit base and should frighten anyone who comes by your desk.

Doom's collector's edition, which will sell for $120, also comes with a copy of the game in a metal case and can be obtained via preorder, according to Gamespot. Those who preorder the collector’s edition or the standard edition will get the Demon Multiplayer Pack, which contains a unique demon armor set with three skin variations, six metallic paint colors, and three id logo patterns. Players will also get a set of six Hack Modules, or consumable items.

During the game launch, “Doom” players will be able to create and customize their own in-game challenges using Doom SnapMap, a bundled level-creation toolkit, Venture Beat reported. SnapMap lets players build all-new levels with custom rule sets and share them online via a cross-platform interface. “Doom” SnapMap game editor makes it easy to create, play, and share user’s own Doom mods.

This new “Doom” features multiplayer death-match, relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fast and fluid movement. The basic story is that a bunch of demons come through a portal from Hell to Mars, and the player who works as a marine working for the United Aerospace Corporation has to retake the space station from the demons.

The rebooted “Doom” languished in development hell for nearly a decade, and the project was restarted multiple times after its initial announcement in 2007. Little of the cancelled “Doom 4” project remains in the final product launching in May.

When the original “Doom” came out in 1993, it perfected the first-person shooter computer game and spawned a whole series of sequels and a multibillion-dollar first-person shooter market. The most recent entry in the series is the “Doom 3” that debuted in 2004. Currently, over 10 million copies of “Doom” have been sold.
