The call for marijuana legalization has been widely expressed in Canda, especially with the federal government's introduction of the Cannabis Act. In response to the bill legalizing cannabis use, some experts and concern citizens reflect on the danger of weed among the country's youth.
The introduction of the Cannabis Act or Bill C-45 aims to legalize and regulate the production, distribution, sale, and possession of cannabis in Canada. Once approved, its three principal objectives will be actualized.
The primary objective of the bill is focused mainly on preventing young people from accessing cannabis, and by protecting public health and safety through strict safety and product quality requirements, according to Lexology. Moreover, the bill also aims to "deter criminal activity through the imposition of serious criminal penalties for those operating outside the legal framework."
However, despite the promise of controlled access and deterrence of crime, some experts are still concern about the health impact of such bill. Medical experts view the bill as something that will endanger the health of the youth.
The Canadian Paediatric Society and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has previously expressed their concern about marijuana, viewing it as something that is not harmless. Experts are warning people about the adverse effects of such substance to the brain, especially developing brains.
"Simply put, cannabis should not be used by young people. It is toxic to neurons, and regular use of marijuana can actually change their developing brains. Most of us know a young person whose life was derailed because of marijuana use. The Bill C-45 is unlikely to prevent such tragedies from occurring - and, conversely, may make them more frequent," New-Medical quoted Dr. Diane Kelsall, Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Medical Association Journal.
In view of the concerns being raised by experts, a call for the rejection of the marijuana legalization in Canada is being voiced out. The hastening of the approval by the Parliament is viewed as a careless delivery on a campaign promise.
