Neonode, a US startup, has created a device called "AirBar" that turns an Apple MacBook into a touchscreen. The bar-like device has a magnetic sensor below the bottom edge of the laptop's display to allow various touch actions like scrolling, swiping and zooming.

Neonode created a 13.3-inch version of the device to bring touchscreen capabilities to the 13-inch MacBook Air through a peripheral that plugs into the laptop's USB port.

The device made its official debut at the CES 2017 and is currently available for pre-order only via AirBar's official website. However, the company said that it would eventually start selling AirBar on Amazon as well for $99.

In 2015, Neonode announced the launch of AirBar. But the device never came into existence until now. According to PCWorld, the USB peripheral is slim and very impressive at adding touch capabilities to devices that lack them. It also shines infrared light upward onto the display as a "screen" for the fingers to interact with.

Until now, the AirBar was only available for 15.6-inch Windows laptops. The AirBar works best when its length matches up exactly with the display of the laptop. AirBar's 13.3-inch model, which features brushed aluminum to match the MacBook Air's color scheme, is priced at $30 more than the 15.6-inch Windows model which is priced at $69.

Neonode intends to market 13.3-inch and 14-inch versions of AirBar for PCs in March along with the new MacBook Air edition. The company also plans to extend the AirBar compatibility to additional MacBook models and PC sizes within the first half of 2017.
