In an interview with the publication Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Jean-Claude Biver, the CEO of Tag Heuer, confirmed that the company would unveil the 2017 Tag Heuer Connected model in May this year. He added that after selling around 56,000 smartwatches following the release of the Tag Heuer Connected in November 2015, the company plans to sell around 150,000 smartwatches this year.
The smartwatch, which is likely to come in two sizes, is expected to pack a better hardware. The two models, the smaller of is for women, would also incorporate different colors and finish. The design of the luxury smartwatch is being developed by the Tag Heuer.
When quizzed about what the new smartwatches would offer, Biver said "not much," which may disappoint fans who were hoping for the second generation of the Tag Heuer Connected wearable to be packed with more functionality and features. The CEO justified his stance by saying that even in the case of Apple's smartwatch, all it offered in its next iteration compared to its older version was the Apple Pay support.
However, the next-gen Tag Heuer smartwatch will enjoy a longer battery life, an improved display, and better reception. According to the company, the most differentiating thing about the wearable is its modular system.
LG is anticipated to be the first company to release smartwatches with Android Wear 2.0. Among other companies, Swarovski and Casio are also expected to launch smartwatches with the new OS.
