Tesla quietly launched its Model S and Model X 100D over the weekend.

Tesla introduced its new Model S 100D with an EPA-rated range of 335 miles when fully charged, making it the world's longest-range consumer electric vehicles, according to Autoblog. It also introduced a similar 100kWh option for the Model X 100D, with a rated range of 295 miles.

By comparison, Tesla's new battery and powertrain combo for the Model S 100D, which has a price tag of $98,300, is 20 miles longer than the more expensive P100D and 41 miles more than the Model S 90D.  The ranges for less expensive counterparts include Chevy Bolt's 238 miles for $37,495; Ford Focus' 115 miles for $30,000; and Nissan Leaf's 107 miles for $31,545, the Fortune noted.

The Model X SUV also received an equal treatment as it managed to reach a 295-mile range on a single charge, a 41-mile boost from the outgoing 90D, according to the Auto Express. However, both are a match in terms of performance with a claimed 0-60 mph of 4.8 seconds plus a top speed of 155 mph.

Talking about the 60 mph acceleration, it could be noted that the Model X SUV is not even close to the 2.9-second dash Tesla claimed for the Model X P100D, although it does have a 6-mile range advantage.

Tesla's latest move on the Model S' range goes beyond not just within the realm of electric cars but also to many gasoline-powered vehicles. According to Fortune, US cars usually have a 12-gallon gas tank and has an average fuel economy of 24.8 mpg (2015 data). Given these figures, a typical brand new gas-run vehicle goes just under 300 miles on one tank.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, was quoted saying in Paris last winter that the company "will probably stop" at a 100kWh battery, as anything beyond that could add too much weight and cost for the car. The Gas2 website, on the other hand, stressed that the statement does not mean that the new Model S 100D will be the longest-range car the company will ever produce, as it is currently manufacturing its new 2170 battery cells in Nevada.
