Starbucks and WeChat teamed up to introduce 'social gifting' feature for coffee buddies across China.
WeChat users can now send Starbucks beverage or gift card to their coffee buddies, after the famous American coffee maker launched a "social gifting" feature.
Using WeChat's Starbucks store, users could now opt to either give a specific drink to a friend or buy a Starbucks gift card. A personal message, accompanied with text, message, or even a video could then be added to the selected Starbucks-branded gift. Once received, the gift will be saved in the recipient's Weixin app and can be redeemed at any Starbucks store in China.

The gifting option gives users a choice of six drinks and six designs for the accompanying e-card. The cheapest coffee you could get is a $4.50 latte or cappuccino. The gift cards also cost between $7.20 and $72. Payment is done via WeChat Wallet found within the app. Of note, cashless transactions via WeChat, as well as Apple Pay, are also acceptable inside Starbucks' China.
The 'Say It With Starbucks' program is part of the coffee giant's effort to expand its network not only across China but also in the digital world. The partnership, which was first announced last December, marked the first time an international brand made it through the WeChat wallet. The coffee chain already has nearly 2,500 stores in the country and plans to double the number by 2021.
Social gifting is not new to China as the trend is particularly famous around Chinese New Year. In the past festive period, WeChat, China's top messaging app, saw more than 14 billion digital 'red envelopes' filled with cash being shared between WeChat users, according to Tech Crunch.
Based on Tencent's 2016 year-end report, WeChat boasts of more than 768 million daily users in September, up 35 percent compared with that of the same period a year ago.
