Presbyopia is an age-related eye condition, people who have this has difficulty seeing things clearly at a close distance. At a young age, the lens of eyes is flexible and soft; it can focus objects both far and near. But when a person reached the age of 40, the lens of the eyes becomes rigid which causes to have difficulty on focusing near objects.
There are several eye implants that can actually correct presbyopia. Tiny lenses or optical devices inserted to the cornea can be an option; the corneal onlays and corneal inlays. These are somehow similar to contact lenses but smaller.
The main purpose of using this device is to have a clear near vision, it also eliminates using of reading glasses. The difference of the two is that corneal inlays put in the thicker layer of the cornea called as stroma. While the corneal onlays is only placed on the epithelium which is the surface of the eyes.
Another procedure that can improve the eyesight is Raindrop. This is the first ever treatment for presbyopia that changes the shape of the cornea. The clinical trial was done and tested 474 people, the reported result of the participant's eyesight improved in 20/40 vision after two years of implantation. However, it has side effects like scarring, glare, infection, and dry eyes.
Kamra may be an another option; it uses a pinhole camera to focus the light in the center of the pupil. Symfony, on the other hand, is a surgery for people with cataracts but it can also be used as an option for presbyopia; the natural lens of the eyes replaced with artificial eye lens.
