It's not easy to get over from someone whom we used to love. When things go wrong, we break up and fall apart. Then there comes what we call the ex-sex. It may just start from a drunk text that reads, "I miss you!" or "Are you busy tonight?" Before you know it, you find yourself naked in bed.

According to Audrey Hope, a relationship expert, going back to an ex is a common phenomenon. Of course, it is inevitable to miss someone, especially if we are used to having them. The decision to engage in intimate actions depends on our motives.

What is "break-up sex"?

Sex after a breakup may serve as a closure. It's never easy to go back to an ex. In the first place, there is always a reason why we broke up. However, people tend to be okay with getting back just for a night.

According to a relationship expert and author April Masini, sex is closure. She said that we could express ourselves through sex with an ex, if not in words. In fact, a 2012 study, published in "Journal of Family Issues," suggests that break-up sex among divorcees is one of the ways to offset their feelings of distance.

Moreover, it is a form of reconciliation. Some people believe that sex with an ex may help to fix the relationship. A 2013 study found that more than half of the teenagers had ex-sex.

We often feel lonely after a breakup. Ex-sex can make us feel hopeful since we are still connected with each other. Digital-age intimacy and relationship expert Robert Weiss said that we might have sex with our ex to cure our loneliness temporarily.

Although bringing back the past is not always a good idea, having sex with an ex may help us feel great. According to Psychology Today, sex is responsible for releasing neurochemicals that can forge love. It sends a signal to our brain, which blocks everything, except the great feeling of sensation. Experts say that the hormone secreted during sex can create a bond which will bring hope to the relationship.
