This naval base lies in the small and protected Bay of Ambelaki on the eastern side of the Greek Island of Salamis. This archaeological find is considered to be the first systematic underwater reconnaissance that were spearheaded by the team of 20 archaeologists of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities and the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology. The researchers had unearthed the relics of the port structures, the lines of defenses, including buildings that dates back to the Classical era in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. and the Hellenistic era in 323 B.C. after the death of Alexander the Great.
According to the researchers, these structures can be seen during low tides but only at some periods in a year. History tells that the naval harbor of Salamis used to be an Athenian stronghold during the Classical era as relayed by Yannos Lolos, the President of the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology. In this exact location, Themistocles attracted the Persians to their defeat into the bay of Salamis.
