According to a report by Space, the development of self-driving cars is still on-going and the aim at present is for further fine - tuning of the technology. Part of this development work is the testing of the vehicles. Hence, NASA has offered the 4,600 meters long and 100-meter wide Shuttle Landing Facility of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the controlled testing.
The project as revealed by NASA is a sci-fi concept that is being realized with the help of radars, lasers, GPS and computer vision. With the invention, the driver will no longer be indispensable as the vehicle is designed for self - navigation, sensing and analyzing its surroundings. Thus, the research will involve a variety of factors that will be taken into consideration because the vehicle will be relying only on the built-in sensors. These factors can include lighting differences during sunrise and sunset, other cars headlights, environmental factors like fog, dust, rain among other interferences.

It should be noted that the self-driving cars are electric powered, hence KSC is also offering electric charging facilities for the cars. All over the U.S., there are already 10 testing pilot sites for the driver-less vehicles. The research will not only benefit NASA's space exploration undertakings but will also provide solutions to problems of drunk and fatigued drivers.
