The United Airlines flight was from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Narita, Japan. After hearing that Hyongtae Pae was shouting at crew members and pushing his wife, the pilot decided to turn the plane around and return to Hawaii's capital city.
An FBI report states that Pae shoved his wife because she was trying to calm him down and thought she was taking the side of the crew. He also allegedly tried to bite and head-butt Marines when they tried to escort him back to his airplane seat, according to News.
The criminal complaint also states that Pae threatened to kill passengers onboard and yelled out that god does not exist, according to The Guardian.
Assistant US attorney Darren Ching argued that Pae's detention hearing on March 30, Wednesday that he should not be released. The reason is that the lawyer believes that Pae who is now on suicide watch could be a danger to himself and other people.
US magistrate judge Kevin Chang gave the order that Pae's bond be set at $25,000. However, he cannot leave the island of Oahu and must receive a mental health evaluation.
Pae's request to return to his home in South Korea was denied by Chang. The reason is that it would require him to board another aircraft.
Defense attorney Jin Tae Kim told reporters outside court that his client is a retired farmer. The 72-year-old man had traveled from South Korea to Hawaii to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary.
Kim claimed that Pae had just started doing yoga to deal with anxiety and had suffered from lack of sleep during the Hawaii vacation. Pae told the FBI that he had had experienced sleep deprivation for 11 days.
Pae was required to turn in his South Korean passport and could face a sentence of up to 20 years in jail.
