Surface Phone Release Date Not Happening Until Late 2018 but Windows 10 Handset Will Launch this 2017?

Microsoft's Build developer conference did not provide any big news this year about new smartphones including Lumia models. Surface Phone fans also did not get any updates about the mobile device but it could reportedly be launched this October. The OS giant seems to be moving away from Lumia smartphones as year-over-year sales plummeted 57 percent during Q4 2015.

Lumia's product line has failed to boost the sales of Windows 10 Mobile devices. This has caused analysts to predict that Microsoft will focus on Surface Phone. Its target market will be professionals who use the mobile device with their desktops and laptops, according to Ecumenical News.

Microsoft reportedly did not make the Surface lineup front and center at Build 2016 because the development of Surface Book as well as Surface Pro 4 are in their early stages. The Bill Gates co-founded company could unveil Surface Phone after it works out hardware and OS issues.

Surface Book will reportedly include a one-of-a-kind design and a detachable screen that transforms into a tablet computer. It is likely Surface Phone would have to have such brand new features before its rollout.

Microsoft has suggested that it will focus on its Xbox One game console and HoloLens augmented reality (AR) device this year. That could limit the number of smartphones it launches each year to one or two, which could include a Surface handset.

In fact, at Build 2016 a Microsoft representative stated that the company is committed to 4-inch mobile screens and it will be the company's focus in the future, according to ZDNet. However, the company rep added that it is not an area in which Microsoft hopes to create developer interest during the next year.

In related news, the most popular attraction at the Build developer conference was Destination: Mars. It gave HoloLens fans the chance to strap on the AR device to enjoy a virtual visit of the Red Planet.

The mixed-reality experience will soon be available at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. HoloLens users had the chance to walk around different areas on Mars via footage captured by Mars Rover. The tour was provided by astronaut Buzz Aldrin of the Apollo 11 mission, and Rover driver Erisa Hines of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
