Modern four-cylinder engines have made a powerful comeback in auto markets. A four-cylinder engine that is well supported with power aiding tools like turbo chargers and direct injection is appealing to both budget-friendly consumers as well as those looking for luxury cars.

New York Times reported that four-cylinder engines promise both fuel efficiency and amazing horsepower. This bodes well for a world that is keen on reducing carbon emissions.

Here is a list of five powerful cars available in 2016 that are powered by four-cylinder engines.

1.       Ford Mustang Eco Boost - This car offers a staggering 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque with its 2.3 liter Eco Boost four-cylinder engine. Ford's website mention that its turbo charger separates exhaust runners in two chambers until its turbine, transferring high-pulse energy to the turbine wheel.

2.       Chevrolet Camaro - It has a 2 liter four-cylinder engine which is turbocharged to yield 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. According to Cheat Sheet, it can run from zero to 60 miles in 5.1 seconds on manual transmission and tops at 155 miles per hour.

3.       Audi S3 - Auto Guide labels this car as "high performance" and a "formidable, entry level sedan." It sports a 2 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that generates 290 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

4.       Mercedes AMG SLC43 - According to Cheat Sheet, this car is one of the most powerful convertibles available. Mercedes SLC series officially replaces its SLK series. This car has a turbo charged 2 liter four-cylinder engine that is capable of 241 horsepower and runs smoothly at 155 miles per hour. According to CNET, car is set for a launch in spring this year. Its pricing information is yet to be released.

5.       Volkswagen Golf R - This car features a 2 liter four-cylinder engine that wields 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. According to auto reviews, Golf R can pick up speed from zero to sixty miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. Golf R can run up to 155 miles per hour.
