During the recent Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2017, Nvidia introduced its media streaming device successor, the Nvidia Shield TV 2017.
The device reportedly comes with the same hardware found on its 2015 model, albeit with a couple of software upgrades. The new model is also packaged with Nvidia's new remote control accessory, which was previously sold separately.

The Nvidia Shield TV 2017 is ideally paired with a gaming PC and a Nvidia graphics card. Users who do not own a gaming PC can opt to subscribe to Nvidia's GeForce Now service, The Verge reported. Consumers who intend to just stream content and not play video games can choose to save money with a Roku Ultra or Amazon Fire TV instead.
Design and Hardware
The newest model features the same design as the 2015 version but sports a smaller body. It still bears the angular patterns and sharp edges of the older model. Due to its reduced size, the latest device lost some of the 2015 model's ports. It drops the micro-USB port and microSD card slot and keeps the rest of the ports. It is still powered by a Nvidia Tegra X1 processor and 3GB RAM. The internal storage starts with 16GB for the standard unit and a 500GB internal memory for the pro model. All models surprisingly do not include an HDMI cable in the box.
Game Controller
Unlike the main unit, the newer model showcases a new controller design. The controller features the same buttons but appears slimmer and angular. The Shield controller sports a polygon-pattern design compared to the older curvy controller of the 2015 model. Slash Gear also notes that the latest model has a better battery life than its predecessor.
Remote control
The new version now includes a remote control accessory for free, which was sold separately for the 2015 unit. It bears the same form factor but sports some small design differences. It still features the same buttons and touch control of the 2015 remote control. However, the 2017 unit comes with removable batteries.
Release date and price
The Nvidia Shield TV 2017 is now available for order and costs $199.99 for the 16GB standard model. The 500GB Pro version is currently on pre-order and has a $299.99 suggested retail price.
