"There is quite some epidemiological, but also experimental data suggesting that coffee has health benefits on liver enzyme elevations, viral hepatitis, NAFLD, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. [...] We were curious to find out whether coffee consumption would have a similar effect on liver stiffness measurements in individuals without chronic liver disease," Medical News Today quoted Dr. Murad as saying.
The research process of Dr. Murrad's team made use of test subjects between 45 years old and above. After undergoing thorough physical checkup and liver examination, it was found out that frequent coffee and tea consumption may help prevent liver fibrosis, before any signs of liver disease to start manifesting.
Apart from regular consumption of tea or coffee, it is also highly suggested that risk factors for liver disease should be avoided. Some of the known risk factors according to American Cancer Society would include but not limited to heavy alcohol use, obesity, tobacco use, type 2 diabetes, and aflatoxins.
Apart from prevention, one way of increasing survival chance would be early detection. If an individual starts to observe weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting, enlarged liver, felt as a mass under the ribs on the right side, itching, and even jaundice, it would be best to seek medical attention immediately. For the abovementioned symptoms are early signs of liver cancer.
