It appears that Android Lollipop is now the most used version of the mobile operating system closely followed by Android KitKat.
Google recently published the latest statistics regarding its Android versions. It appears that Android Lollipop is now the most used version of the mobile operating system closely followed by Android KitKat.
The statistics released by Google were the market share of the Android operating system in early March. Android Lollipop takes 36.1 percent share of all Android devices while KitKat takes 34.3 percent, according to CNet.

Tech analysts believe that the ongoing rise of the Android Lollipop means that mobile users are getting more and more updated in terms of their operating system. Based on the latest statistics, this is the first time Lollipop took the lead from KitKat.
It took Android Lollipop 16 months from the time it was released to take over the lead from KitKat. Another Android version that saw a rise in its market share is Marshmallow which nearly doubled it figures to 2.3 percent in just a matter of one month. Android Ice Cream Sandwich snagged 2.3 percent as well.
Market analysts are positive that Android Marshmallow's share of the market will increase significantly once flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 hit the market in the coming months. The two mentioned devices run on Android Marshmallow right out of the box and their popularity could help increase the market share of the operating system as well.
According to Venture Beat, what is interesting about the latest Google statistics about its mobile operating system is the fact that the most used version of Android will always be outdated. Based on the data provided by Google, a version of Android will only be able to take the top spot in terms of market share once a later version is released.
Even outdated Android versions still showed up in the latest Google statistics. Android 2.2 Froyo still holds around 0.1 percent of the device market share. Android Gingerbread and Android Jelly Bean had 2.6 percent and 19.1 percent of the device market share, respectively. Android Honeycomb was not listed since it accounts to less than 0.1 percent of the total market share. Lastly, Android versions that are older than Froyo were not included, as well as devices that don't have Google Play Store installed on them.
